The word bodega means small grocery store, especially in a Spanish-speaking area in the US; in a Spanish-speaking country, bodega might refer to a wine shop or cellar. In 1918, 307 Bodega began its life as a neighborhood grocery store, a bodega. In 1925, Thomas J. Caufield opened Caulfield's Market which carried fresh meats and National Ice Cream. The local bodega'' was common in Petaluma; there were about 20 of them. The small shop across the street was also a grocery. They were about convenience, and walking distance to pick up essentials. Caufield, like so many in the early history of the United States, was an entrepreneur.
