1806 Main St Baker City, OR 97814
Amazing commercial building on the main floor with the potential of a residential living area upstairs. HISTORY - Mary Alfred was one of Baker City?s pioneer businesswomen. She and here husband, Francis Alfred, came to Baker County in 1870. She had a millinery and mantua (robe) shop in her home. Mr. Alfred drove a stage between Baker City and La Grande. In 1897, the Alfreds built the Alfred Block. They leased out the downstairs and lived upstairs, where Mrs. Alfred had her shop. The first downstairs businesses included a grocery store and the Plymouth Clothing House. The downstairs eventually became a saloon. For more than 50 years it was known as Scotty?s Tavern. For many years the second floor was a ?sporting house, ? one of several in the block. When the Rex Rooms closed in the 1950s, it may have been the last such establishment in Baker City.
